Classification

Let’s start with what counts as a heavy-duty truck. In general, trucks are categorized by numbered classes. Heavy-duty trucks rank in the Class 7 and Class 8 categories. They have weight limits that range from 26,000 pounds to more than 33,000 pounds. This means semi-trailers fall under the category of “heavy-duty.”

Keep in mind that Class 8 rigs can reach up to 80,000 pounds in total weight. This means they usually require an “oversize load” designation with special permits and an established route. There are also Class 9 rigs which are commonly referred to as super heavy-duty or special duty trucks.

Why Buy?

You may be wondering whether or not this kind of rig is worth your investment. These vehicles can be expensive, so you need to be sure that you will use one if you get it. If you are constantly transporting heavy or large equipment for your company, it’s probably a good idea to invest in a heavy-duty truck.

But maybe you don’t work for a company. There are plenty of drivers who work independently. In this case, owning a heavy-duty truck can also be beneficial. You’ll have all the space you need to transport your goods and you can set your own hours and get a decent pay.

What You’ll Need

Before you buy one of these large rigs, it’s important to know what the responsibilities of ownership entail. For example, as you may already know, you won’t be able to legally drive a heavy-duty truck with a standard Class C driver’s license. At the very least, you’ll need a Class B CDL, or Commercial Driver’s License, which will require additional training and testing. If you are a driver who works for a company, they may provide their own training. However, if you are an independent driver, you’ll need to find your own training.
