History

Western Star was founded in 1967 as a division of White Motor Company. It was initially called White Western Star, with a new location in Kelowna, British Columbia to complement its Cleveland, Ohio, parent company’s facilities. Western Star production was moved to Ogden, Utah, within a few years, then purchased by the Australian subsidiary owners in 1991.

The company was picked up by DaimlerChrysler in 2000 as part of its Freightliner Trucks division. A few years after this, Western Star production moved to a plant in Portland, Oregon, in 2002, with additional manufacturing facilities in Cleveland, North Carolina, opened in 2015. 

Western Star Trucks remains a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America, which is in turn a subsidiary of German-owned Daimler AG. The company remains the world’s leading producer of custom heavy-duty trucks, with all the technological advances needed to provide drivers with power, comfort, convenience and durability.

 

Models

Western Star produces many different Class 8 commercial vehicles for off-road and highway usage, with five model families. They are particularly adept at building customized trucks for specific needs. Many different types of interiors, engines, transmissions, suspensions and brakes are available in several configurations to ensure that every independent truck owner and fleet manager can find what they’re after. Western Star also focuses on adding safety features to its trucks, such as anti-lock braking systems, better traction and more stability, with the goal to adhere to the United States’ DOT regulations.

Western Star additionally manufactures trucks for the international market, with right-hand drive trucks available for their markets in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. The company used to produce trucks for the United States military as well as for Canadian Forces, although they no longer do this. Western Star trucks can even be seen in many different movies and TV shows due to their iconic look.
